ADI Standards Check Training & Rescue
– Taught the lesson in a style suited to the pupil’s learning style and current ability
– Encouraged the pupil to analyse problems and take responsibility for their learning
– Given the pupil appropriate and timely feedback during the session
– Given enough feedback to help the pupil understand any potentially safety-critical incidents
What is the new ADI standards check?
The ADI standards checks are an essential part of maintaining quality among driving instructors. The aim of the standards check is to assess your ability to instruct and whether your instruction helps a person to learn in an effective way. The new check will assess how well you meet the national standard for driver and rider training, which is why it’s being called a ‘standards check’. This standard sets out what you must be able to do, and what you must know and understand to provide training to drivers and riders.
The ADI standards check booking letter
When it is time for you to take your ADI standards check test you’ll receive an invitation letter saying:
You are now due your ADI Standards Check. Please book this online at www.gov.uk/book-driving-test within 14 days of this letter. To access this service, you will need a valid email address. You will not be allowed to cancel this appointment online, however you will be allowed to change the date once. The ADI registrar can consider removing your name from the register if you fail to book a Standards Check within the given time, or if you fail to attend a Standards Check.
In order to book your ADI standards check test online you will need your driving licence number and your ADI personal reference number.
What happens during the ADI standards check?
The ADI standards check will be conducted by an examiner observing you delivering a normal one hour driving lesson. To start with your examiner will ask you for some background information about your pupil, such as how many lessons they’ve had and what you’ve been working on recently. You must demonstrate clearly to the examiner that the needs that you’ve identified have been discussed and agreed with the pupil. The examiner will then tell you to deliver a lesson in exactly the same way as you would normally do. You’ll be assessed against all of the competencies set out on the standards check form.
In order to book your ADI standards check test online you will need your driving licence number and your ADI personal reference number.
I have no hesitation in recommending 4 Wheelz to any other driving instructors. A big thank you to H who has helped me so much & made my check test training so enjoyable. I feel ready to take the world on. Just wish they were based in Sheffield.
Thank you again for helping me getting my grade A today. I did a seminar earlier this month with you and I think that was really helpful. Today I did my check test and I did exactly as I was instructed by you, so I just want to say to you and your team thank you very much for all the help , it was really worth it for me to come all the way from London . Thank you again.
Many thanks H for providing me with renewed interest and zest to up my standard of instruction and enable the check test to be cleared with confidence. The professionally delivered training should enlighten any instructor to achieve that something extra.’
What should I take?
On the day of your standards check you’ll need to bring:
- Your ADI registration certificate, even if you aren’t taking money for the lesson
- A pupil
- A car that is:
- Fitted with rear seat belts (Note If the car has rear head restraints these
should be fitted) - Roadworthy, safe and reliable (Note Soft top convertibles are not acceptable)
- Displaying L plates (or D plates in Wales) if appropriate
The above points are very important as your ADI standards check will not go ahead if you don’t bring these with you. It’s your responsibility to know the area around the test centre where the standards check is taking place. We strongly advise that you take some time to familiarise yourself with it.
When the standards check has ended
At the end of the standards check the examiner will give you feedback about your performance and a copy of the standards check assessment form. This will help you to understand your strengths and where you might look to develop your competence. You won’t get any additional written reports or follow-up letters.
During our check test training your 4 Wheelz trainer will assess your characteristics, coaching and teaching skills and will discuss these with you thoroughly.
The trainer will then adapt the training in order to target any weakness and help you to improve these areas.
Your trainer is highly qualified and is on the ORDIT register.
This gives you the confidence that you are in the safe hands of a knowledgeable trainer.
The trainer will give you a good understanding of the grading system and how the grade is derived. 4 Wheelz trainers have trained many instructors, taking substandard instructors to improve to excellent grades.
As part of our 4 Wheelz driving instructor franchise we provide franchisees with free ADI check test training seminars to help keep you up-to-date.

Skills, knowledge and understanding required
As an ADI you are responsible for the standards check lesson. You should make sure that you have sound knowledge of the area around your chosen driving test centre (DTC) so you can:
- Plan the lesson
- Give appropriate directions to your pupil during the standards check
The pupil that you choose to bring along to your check test can be at any level of ability, but they cannot be on the ADI register or have passed the ADI part 2 test.
New standards check grading
For each standard within the check test, there are 17 in total, you’ll receive a score from 0-3
Score | Description |
3 | Keep up the good work |
2 | Acceptable – there are clear areas of improvement |
1 | Not acceptable – more work needed |
0 | Completely unacceptable |
You can see the standards check marking sheet here.
Following completion of your standards check you’ll receive one of three grades as listed below.
- A grade (85% or over) – an overall high standard of instruction
- B grade (60% or over) – a sufficient level of competence
- Fail (less than 60%) – an unsatisfactory performance
The scoring for the above grading is broken down as per the below grading
Total Score | Grade | Description |
0 to 30 | Fail | Your performance is unsatisfactory |
31 to 42 | Grade B | You’ll be added to the register of ADIs or remain on it |
43 to 51 | Grade A | You have shown a high standard of instruction and will be added to the register or remain on it |
This simplified grading makes it easier for learner drivers to understand the skill of their instructor, allowing them to make a more informed decision when it comes to choosing an instructor.
The DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) wants to keep working with the industry to help top grade instructors promote the higher level of competence that they’ve worked hard to achieve.

After taking training with 4Wheelz for my check test, it was obvious without the valuable input I received & with the extensive industry knowledge that was shown, I would not have passed my check test.’
I have twice sought 4 Wheelz help following problems with ADI check tests. Each time the trainers knowledge & expertise has highlighted & dramatically improved my instructional techniques, allowing me to pass easily with confidence. I will definitely contact 4 Wheelz before my next check test.’
H explained my faults very clearly & how I should do things differently. He also helped me realise that Q & A was more important than keep on telling the pupil. The training sessions helped me to be more confident & helped me to get a grade A. Thanks.
I did my check test and I did exactly as I was instructed by Mr Surti so I would like to say thank you very much to you and your team for all the help, it was really worth it for me to come all the way from London. Thank you again.
I have improved on my ADI grade thanks to 4 Wheelz. I’ve received good structured & professional training. I found the training to be relaxed + enjoyable & a great learning curve. H gave me more confidence in my ability to improve on my ADI grade. I would recommend 4 Wheelz.’
Thank you H for the Standards Check Test course that you presented it was a fantastic course, very interactive, clear and to the point. By the end of the course I had more of an understanding of what I needed to prepare myself for my test and when I was stuck preparing for it you or a member of 4 Wheelz was easily contacted and put me back on track, I hadn’t passed my check test on first attempt and couldn’t of done this without doing this course and I would recommend this course with 4 Wheelz prior doing the check test to other ADI ‘s. Thank you very much sincerely I’m one happy girl! Heidi’
Having rejoined 4Wheelz last October after several years in the wilderness, I decided to take training in preperation for the new standards check with H Surti, Director of training at 4Wheelz. His coaching & teaching skills became obvious on the first session & I was left in no doubt about what was required for the Standards Check, with my confidence level now being 10 with 10 being very good, I took the Standards Check on May 1st acquiring a grade A (achieving 50 marks out of a possible 51). I think H has a special way of bringing out the best in his clients & holds a genuine concern for their success, something I have found lacking in other establishments over the years.
4Wheelz also hold Standards Check training courses which I found extremely informative & beneficial. My advice to other ADI’s out there – if in doubt give H at 4Wheelz a shout.
What a relief – the standards check is finally over !! I could never have done it without the wise words and advice and tuition of H Surti! He’s been an absolute ace coach. I could often see that the techniques that he was trying to get me to use with my students were often the same techniques and coaching methods he used on me. It worked with me, so why wouldn’t it work with the students? The standards check seminar delivered at 4Wheelz is an amazing day full of info about the check. You walk away knowing exactly what it entails and how it is assessed against the marking criteria. I cannot recommend H enough, if you have a standards check approaching and are feeling nervous about it H is definitely your man!’
